Coyopa is On Air

Twofour Digital has been working with the BBC since 2007 on Project Coyopa to develop the technology which will provide better audio quality for BBC Radio online.
Previously, the BBC’s online radio broadcasting was carried out using compressed off-air feeds as the source. Now, Coyopa takes live, broadcast-quality digital audio feeds from the radio studios at Broadcasting House and encodes them directly.
Listen again services are also no longer encoded from off-air signals and are now encoded directly from the transmission chain.
Moving the encoding ‘closer to the audio source significantly improves the quality for listeners, as there is less compression on the audio’, says Twofour Managing Director Paul Tarplee.
‘By Christmas, most of the BBC Radio content you can hear online, including via the iPlayer, will be delivered by Coyopa. The encoding farm we’ve built for the BBC has got to rank as one of the best in the world, and we are tremendously proud to have worked on this challenging but rewarding project.’
